. Peter . . . walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind
was boisterous, he was afraid . . . —Matthew 14:29-30
‘We step right out with recognition of God in some things, then
self-consideration enters our lives and down we go. If you are truly
recognizing your Lord, you have no business being concerned about how and where
He engineers your circumstances. The
things surrounding you are real, but when you look at them you are
immediately overwhelmed, and even unable to recognize Jesus. Then comes His
rebuke, “. . . why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31).
Let your actual circumstances be what they may, but keep recognizing Jesus,
maintaining complete reliance upon Him.’ CHAMBERS
Has this ever happened to you? You are going along quite well … feeling
confident in your life and then something happens … you suddenly become aware
of the fact that you are in a situation that you cannot deal with. You don’t have the physical or emotional
strength to stand against it. You lose
heart … you become fearful … you feel
alone, abandoned …. you doubt yourself and you doubt God. It can happen so quickly … we take our eyes
off of Jesus and look at our own strength or should I say weakness. In Peter’s case he refocused on the One who
had called him and “cried out, “Lord, save me!” … 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his
hand and caught him. “You
of little faith,” he
said, “why did you
doubt?”
2 Corinthians 12:9 “9 But he said
to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness. ” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my
weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
Philippians 4:13 “13 I can do all this through him (Jesus) who gives me
strength.”
Do you see the point here? It is not about what you can do in those
circumstances .. it is what Jesus can do in you … it is keeping your focus on
Him … not on your circumstances. It’s not
denying that there are waves … Peter was in the middle of the sea .. He had
just gotten out of a boat … It is about trusting in Jesus … So Peter looked to
Jesus and … did you catch this … they
walked back to the boat together …
Matthew 14:32-33
32 And when they climbed into the
boat, the wind died down. 33
Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the
Son of God.”
Did you notice that the waves did not cease until
they had walked on them together? And
the ones who stayed in the boat .. the others who were afraid to even get out
of the boat .. .they saw what happened and their faith was strengthened. Did you know that there are people watching
you deal with life? That your life and
your dependence upon Jesus is a witness to them? That
your faithfulness in your difficult circumstances can be a testimony and
encouragement to others?
People are not so much interested in what you say
until they see what you do …. So let your light shine … [today] … before all
men … (Matthew
5:16)
