Having Spiritual Discernment

"Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore, give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. .....Then God said to him [Solomon]: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you." - 1 Kings 3:8-9, 11-12

Of course, that was Solomon praying to God and God answering him. Notice that Solomon's focus was not on himself but on the good of others. All of us need spiritual discernment. We need to see the world as it is. We need to be like watchmen on the wall for the good of others, family, friends, other Believers and the lost. Like the mighty men of David. Specifically, the sons of Issachar.

"of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do" - 1 Chronicles 12:32

Having discernment so that we might know what we ought to do in a world running full on toward the gates of hell.  Paul prayed for the church at Phillipi -

"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ," - Philippians 1:9-10

And where does the discernment come from? Paul prayed for the Colossian church,

"For this reason, we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding." - Colossians 1:9

Spiritual discernment develops in the life of any Believer who is submitted to the Spirit of God and is seeking God's truth through the Word of God by the grace of God. We don't decide to be wise but become wise as a result of our pursuit of God and seeking His wisdom. And all that not for our own benefit but for the good of others and the glory of God.

Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.

By Faith Alone By His Grace Alone And For His Glory Alone
