"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house." - Matthew 5:13-15
Jesus spoke of His followers - we Christians - as salt and light. Each has its unique purposes - Salt to preserve, to flavor, to heal. Light to reveal what is hidden in the darkness - to help those who cannot see to see what is there and what is not there. Light brings life. We can see it in creation - how the plants will turn toward the sun because they are designed to depend upon the light to live and prosper.
"Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life." - John 8:12
As Christians, we have the light of life - eternal life - and so, as His disciples, we are to let that light shine in a dark world. It should not be hidden - but, IMO, at the same time it should not be like shining a bright light into someone's eyes. Many, if not most, people will find the Gospel message offensive even when spoken in love. Don't be surprised by that or let it discourage you from letting your light shine for fear of offending someone. Fulfill your God-given purpose during this short life.
"So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." - 1 Peter 2:7-9
"Amazing grace how sweet the sound - that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found. Was blind but now I see!" - John Newton, Amazing Grace
Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
