“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life
also….And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me….So likewise,
whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” —Luke
14:26-27, 33
“If the closest relationships of a disciple’s life conflict
with the claims of Jesus Christ, then our Lord requires instant obedience to
Himself. Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to a Person— our Lord
Jesus Christ. […] To be a disciple is to be a devoted bondservant motivated by
love for the Lord Jesus. Many of us who call ourselves Christians are not truly
devoted to Jesus Christ. No one on earth has this passionate love for the Lord
Jesus unless the Holy Spirit has given it to him. We may admire, respect, and
revere Him, but we cannot love Him on our own.” CHAMBERS
What does the Christian life cost you? If you can say “nothing”, there is a problem.
Every one of us is devoted to something …
and probably even more than one something.
Jesus asks “Do you love Me?” Do
you love Me more than these?” (John 21:15)
What are the these? Your friends,
your family, your habits, your job, your possessions, your own life … your sin. (Matthew 8:21-22) Jesus told the young man to “let the dead [those
not following Jesus] bury the dead” In other words, if you are going to follow
Jesus, your first concern is following Him. There can be no other primary devotion in your
heart. That's what “all” means in Matthew
22. We really don’t get it. I think maybe because we don’t want to get
it. We want what Jesus has to offer us,
but we don’t want to pay the price that comes with it. We want to do both. (Luke 16:12-14) You cannot love two things the most … only
one … what you are doing is deceiving yourself so you don’t have to give one of
them up, but God is not mocked. No
matter how much you might want to, you cannot change the truth. You can only obey it or disobey it. So, what cha gonna do? Huh? ELGIN
