…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… —Joshua
24:15
“A person’s will is embodied in the actions of the whole
person. I cannot give up my will— I must exercise it, putting it into action. I
must will to obey, and I must will to receive God’s Spirit. When God gives me a
vision of truth, there is never a question of what He will do, but only of what
I will do. The Lord has been placing in front of each of us some big proposals
and plans. The best thing to do is to remember what you did before when you
were touched by God. Recall the moment when you were saved, or first recognized
Jesus, or realized some truth. It was easy then to yield your allegiance to
God. Immediately recall those moments each time the Spirit of God brings some
new proposal before you. “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will
serve….” Your choice must be a deliberate determination— it is not something
into which you will automatically drift.” CHAMBERS
(Luke 22:42) “Not
my will but your will be done..” Whose
will are we talking about here? I wanted
to make a clarification .. words can be so confusing, can’t they? In Luke, Jesus is saying that He chooses to
do what the Father wants, even if it is contrary to what He wants. Will is a choice, and we always have a
choice. I can choose my own way or God’s
way. That is what temptation is. A test
of choice. Do I satisfy the opportunity
to sin that has been presented to me, or obey God and reject the
temptation. Sinning is a choice. You may not think of it that way, but it
is. No one makes you sin, you choose to
sin. If you are spiritually weak .. you
are in trouble. If your love for God is
less than your love for the things of this world … you will choose poorly. It is a constant battle. One that you can only be prepared to fight
and win if you are disciplining yourself in the faith … yes that’s right …
reading the Word, praying .. you know.
When I was younger and more involved in athletic activities,
I always tried to play golf, tennis, racquetball, running … with someone who
was better than me. Why, because it made
me better. In the same way, you should
seek out a relationship with a Christian who is more mature than you. Dr Howard Hendricks said this … everyone should
have three Christians in their lives … a Paul .. someone who can build into
their lives .. a Barnabas … someone who can keep them accountable in their
Christian walk .. and a Timothy … someone in whose life they are building … do
you have people in your life like that?
Or do you have people around you who only tell you that you are doing
the best you can do and they are proud of you … good words, but they don’t help
you grow in your faith. Think about
it. ELGIN
