‘Think of the last thing you prayed about-were you
devoted to your desire or to God? Was your determination to get some gift of
the Spirit for yourself or to get to God? “For your Father knows the things you
have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew
6:8). The reason for asking is so you may get to know God better. “Delight
yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).’ CHAMBERS
James
4:2-3 “You do not have because you do not ask God. When
you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may
spend what you get on your pleasures.”
What do you pray about? Isn’t it OK to ask God for help? Yes, of
course. So what is the problem? When the motive of our prayer is to satisfy
the lust of our flesh, the lust of our eyes, or the pride of life. (1 John 2:16). When we pray for those things that we love
more than God and then ask God to give them to us. It is like a teenager asking their parents
for some money to buy alcohol so they can get drunk and skip school. Can you imagine how you would feel? But, we often do the same thing with God.
Psalm 37:4 is one our life verses. We have found that as we seek God, He changes
what our hearts desire .. what we are passionate about. We get in tune with God. A friend and I were leading a church service
some time back. I was preaching and he
was leading worship. He had brought his
young sons with him. Unbeknownst to him, while we were speaking … one of the
sons detuned his guitar. When it was
time to sing … my friend struck the first chord, but the sound we expected was
not the sound that came out of the guitar … but a very strange noise was
lofting through the church. That is how
it is when our hearts are out of tune with God.
Before beginning a concert, the musicians make certain that their instruments
are in tune … they are ready …. That is what we should do every day … we need
to tune up .. not just start playing our song of life. Hey the concert is about to start … are you
ready?
