“If you have received a ministry from the Lord Jesus, you will know that the need is not the same as the call— the need is the opportunity to exercise the call. The call is to be faithful to the ministry you received when you were in true fellowship with Him. This does not imply that there is a whole series of differing ministries marked out for you. It does mean that you must be sensitive to what God has called you to do, and this may sometimes require ignoring demands for service in other areas.” CHAMBERS
The “call” is not just missionaries or what you might consider “super spiritual people” God has a purpose … a place … for all of us … read 1 Corinthians 12:7-28. Ephesians 4:11-12. God intended all of us to be functioning parts of the Body of Christ. Some of us would like to be the appendix … not do anything, just hang around the Body. I can’t seem to find the gift of hanging around anywhere in the Bible.
In the study Experiencing God, Blackaby says that we can hear God’s voice through the Spirit as we read the Word, as we pray, through circumstances and through other Believers in the Body. Of course we have to be listening. He also says that when God speaks there are a couple of things that the Bible shows us. 1) When you hear God you know it’s Him. 2) When you hear God you know exactly what He is saying to you. And 3) When you hear God you have to decide if you are going to obey Him.
Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the LORD?" And Saul said to Samuel, "But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal." So Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:19-22)
In these verses, the Lord has told King Saul to do a specific thing in a specific way, but King Saul decides that he has a better idea … It is really a matter of love … of lordship … If Jesus is Lord our only answer can be yes .. if He is not, we will have a better idea … we want to do it our way … we don’t see it as “bucking up” against God, we see it as an alternative and “really” better than what God said. In fact we can’t imagine why He didn’t think of it. Do you see a problem here? King Saul thought he had a better idea and did not understand that what he did was sin. Imagine Moses deciding that he would find another way across the Red Sea. You get the idea.
There is a song .. Yes Lord yes to your will and to your way. Yes Lord yes, I will trust you and obey. When your Spirit speaks to me, with my whole heart I’ll agree and I will answer yes Lord yes. Just say Yes!
