…the simplicity that is in Christ. —2 Corinthians 11:3
“Simplicity is the secret to seeing things clearly. A saint
does not think clearly until a long time passes, but a saint ought to see
clearly without any difficulty. You
cannot think through spiritual confusion to make things clear; to make
things clear, you must obey. In intellectual matters you can think
things out, but in spiritual matters you will only think yourself into further
wandering thoughts and more confusion. […] Even the very smallest thing that we
allow in our lives that is not under the control of the Holy Spirit is
completely sufficient to account for spiritual confusion, and spending all of
our time thinking about it will still never make it clear. Spiritual confusion
can only be conquered through obedience. As soon as we obey, we have
discernment.” CHAMBERS
Most of our lives are very complicated, and they should not
be. Our lives reflect a tangled web of
relationships, choices that we have made and the consequences associated with
those choices. To live this new life in Christ successfully … simply, we must
live in obedience to the Word of God. Obedience
is possible when we have our relationships in order and our mind set on the right
things. Having our relationships in the
right order is a result of setting our hearts on God. Loving God is intentional. It cannot be feigned. When Jesus challenged Peter after His
resurrection … He told Peter that if Peter loved Him, it will be evidenced by
the way Peter lived his life. Peter said
he loved Jesus. But Jesus said love is
more than words. (John 21:15-17)
Having our minds set on the right things, means that we
choose what we think about, dwell on. (Philippians 4:8-9) “Finally, brethren,
whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just,
whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of
good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything
praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and
received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with
you.” When you have the peace of God,
your life is simple … it does not mean that you are not walking in a raging
storm. But your response to the storm is
one of simple dependence upon the One you have your heart set on. What is it that you expose your mind to every
day? What do you watch on
television? For most people television
is like moth and a flame. I have been surprised by the trend to have
multiple televisions in restaurants. I
watch people as they try not to watch the television. Restaurants used to be places you went to
relate to those you went with. Now they
are like sports bars. So noisy you can barely
have a conversation. (sorry for the rant).
Set your mind. (Romans 8:5) “For those who live
according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those
who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” Did you catch that? Your life will follow whatever you set your
mind on. Think about it. ELGIN
