If you…remember that your brother has something against you…
—Matthew 5:23
“This verse says, “If you bring your gift to the altar, and
there remember that your brother has something against you….” It is not saying,
“If you search and find something because of your unbalanced sensitivity,” but,
“If you…remember….” In other words, if something is brought to your conscious
mind by the Spirit of God— “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come
and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:24). Never object to the intense sensitivity of
the Spirit of God in you when He is instructing you down to the smallest
detail. […] The true mark of the
saint is that he can waive his own rights and obey the Lord Jesus.” CHAMBERS
Can you think of a time when the Spirit has brought something
or someone to mind and you quickly dispelled the thought? When there is something “ungodly” that has
taken up residence in our hearts, we really don’t want to think about it, do
we? We prefer to pretend that all is
well and right in our little world spiritually.
But the Spirit of God has a purpose … (John 16:7,8,13) “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient
for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto
you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will
reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: …. he will
guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he
shall hear, that shall he speak:”
Most of life is out of our control. How people respond to us is up to them, not
us. But, how we respond to other people
is up to us. (Romans 12:17-19) “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to
do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If
it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do
not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is
written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”
I don’t think that the Lord is saying that if someone
refuses to be reconciled to you that you can never come before God. I do believe that the Word is saying that even
if the other person does not change, you must forgive them. “As far as it depends upon you” Harbor no anger in your heart toward
them. Impossible you think? You are
right, apart from the power of God in you that is. We must be careful about trivializing the
negative feelings we have towards others.
(1 John 3:15) “Anyone who hates a brother or sister is
a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in
him.” Wow! Anger is the fetal version of hate. Sin begins in the heart . .that is point when Jesus said … (Matthew
5:8) “But I tell you that anyone who
looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his
heart.” When we come before God, our
hearts must be right . .clean of sin … Only then can our light shine. Think about it. ELGIN
