‘True surrender is not simply surrender of our external
life but surrender of our will— and once that is done, surrender is complete. The greatest crisis we ever face is the
surrender of our will. Yet God never forces a person’s will into surrender,
and He never begs. He patiently waits until that person willingly yields to
Him. And once that battle has been fought, it never needs to be fought again.’
CHAMBERS
One of my granddaughters is considering going into
the military service after High school. I
was talking with my daughter about that this morning, asking if she understood
the implications of joining the military, but then remembered that very few
young men and women understand the implications of that commitment … before
they make it. To serve in the military
means to give up rights to yourself.
That is a reflection of what becoming a Christian is like. I think it is
safe to say that no one fully understands what following Jesus really means, before
they become a Christian. Following the
military analogy a little further … say a young man joins the military … he
wears the uniform, does what he is told to do, but all the while, in his heart,
he is wearing Levis and a t-shirt, yearning to do as he pleases. On the outside he is a soldier, but in his
heart, he is defiant and following his own path.
In the Garden, Jesus prayed to the Father to
remove the cup, yet He surrendered to the Father’s will. Obedient even to the cross. Luke 9:23 ‘Then he [Jesus] said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must
deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’
Does your heart belong to God? Are you committed to following Jesus no
matter where that leads you? When you
says ‘yes’ to the Lord … not your will but His will be done …. your light shining
the brightest …
