Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority
has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of
all the nations…" —Matthew 28:18-19
““Go therefore….” To “go” simply means to live. Acts 1:8 is
the description of how to go. Jesus did not say in this verse, “Go into
Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria,” but, “…you shall be witnesses to Me in [all
these places].” He takes upon Himself the work of sending us. “If you abide in
Me, and My words abide in you…” (John 15:7)— that is the way to keep going.
Where we are placed is then a matter of indifference to us, because God
sovereignly engineers our goings. “None of these things move me; nor do I count
my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry
which I received from the Lord Jesus…” (Acts 20:24). That is how to keep going
until we are gone from this life.” CHAMBERS
I have shared this before, but it bears sharing again. When we
were in Mississippi, after Hurricane Katrina, a volunteer asked me if I liked
being in there. We were in the middle of
a disaster area. There was no joy, only
sorrow among the people. Destruction surrounded us, every day for years. That question gave me pause to think. I had never considered whether I liked doing what I was doing, being where I have being. After some reflection, I
answered …. “There is nothing better than
being in the center of God’s will for your life. Geography has nothing to do with it. So, I
love being in Mississippi.” We often
tend to look at our circumstances as a problem.
Here I am dealing with whatever, it is difficult, it is distasteful, it
is discouraging. But in spite of that, we are salt and
light. Our purpose is to bring glory to
God and point the lost to Jesus. It
doesn’t matter where you are in life. A butcher,
a baker, a candlestick maker, a housewife,
a worker, a husband, a father, it doesn’t matter. You must be faithful where you are. You are
on a mission, whether you think you are or not.
(Hebrews 12:1-2) “Therefore,
since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay
aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us
run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God. For consider Him who has endured
such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and
lose heart.”
Martie and I were physically and emotionally exhausted when we
left Mississippi. The Lord had us to rest
beside a stream for a season and then sent us to Haiti. Strength for this new life can only be found
in Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Don’t lose hope (Isaiah 35:4-8)
“Say to those with anxious heart, “Take
courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of
God will come, But He will save you.” Then the eyes of the blind will be opened
And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a
deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break
forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah. The scorched land will become
a pool And the thirsty ground springs of water; In the haunt of jackals, its
resting place, Grass becomes reeds and rushes. A highway will be there, a
roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness.”
Don’t lose heart in
the midst of difficulty. “Look to the
hills from whence your help cometh … [your] help comes from the Lord, maker of
heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121) ELGIN
