I need more power!

My Utmost For His Highest

Every Christian must experience the essence of the incarnation by bringing the next step down into flesh-and-blood reality and by working it out with his hands. We lose interest and give up when we have no vision, no encouragement, and no improvement, but only experience our everyday life with its trivial tasks. The thing that really testifies for God and for the people of God in the long run is steady perseverance, even when the work cannot be seen by others. And the only way to live an undefeated life is to live looking to God. Ask God to keep the eyes of your spirit open to the risen Christ, and it will be impossible for drudgery to discourage you.’ CHAMBERS

I was thinking about the drive from Port au Prince to Jacmel through the mountains.  Many people who ride .. talk about how long it takes, how treacherous it is, how uncomfortable  … but really with no consideration for the driver .. who must deal with near misses, difficult roads … and the stress of heightened awareness for three hours.  For some the next step is to endure the ride .. for others it is to drive the vehicle.  Whatever the degree of difficulty, each of us needs the strength that can only come from God. James 1:2-4  ”My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,    knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

I used to say that I don’t have problems, just opportunities to excel.  Trials are opportunities to trust.  Reminders that we need the power of God in our lives.  The danger is that we think that instead we should just try harder … When you fly a helicopter, there is something called ‘settling with power’ which, if it happens, is very dangerous.  Helicopters can ascend and descend vertically, but if the conditions are right – or wrong – the helicopter can try to use the disturbed air the rotor blades creates to produce lift .. but that is not going to happen .. so the helicopter starts descending – quickly – the pilot’s natural instinct is to add power .. but that only makes more disturbed air … which means you go down faster.  The only solution when you are settling with power is to fly out of the disturbed air which is contrary to your natural instincts …

When we find ourselves in that situation in our lives, we must do what is contrary to our natural inclination .. we must trust God … if we don’t .. well it’s not the fall that does you harm, it is the sudden stop
