"Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one." - Matthew 6:11-13
One day at a time, dear Jesus. That is all I am asking of you. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray - that is what He told them to do. Ask God for enough for today. Our daily bread or portion. A little later He said this ...
"seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." - Matthew 6:33-34
Focusing on today. There is a saying in Haiti, "Ti pa ti pa", meaning gradually, small steps or step by step. Put another way, answering the question, "How do you eat an elephant?" Answer, "On bite at a time." Ask God to provide for what you face today. Then tomorrow, and then the next day.
"Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." - John 6:32-35
"You can have all this world. More than silver, more than gold. You are the treasure that I hold. Now that I've tasted of Your goodness. Nothing else will satisfy. Just give me Jesus." Give Me Jesus, Fernando Ortega.
When we think of our daily bread, I think most often, our minds go to the natural - physical, relational, financial issues. But, on reflection, I think it must start with a hunger for the "Bread of Heaven." - the spiritual. everything else is subordinate to that - don't you think so? We say that we love God with our all, but when we are faced with the fires of life - when we feel the heat from them - it is in our nature - our old nature - to give those things primacy in our minds. It is not wrong to pray for those things - but it is wrong to let them dominate us.
Seek first His Kingdom.
Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
