Why You Should Pray

“Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” —Matthew 9:38

“The key to [your] difficult task is in the hand of God, and that key is prayer, not work— that is, not work as the word is commonly used today, which often results in the shifting of our focus away from God. The key to [your] difficult task is also not the key of common sense, nor is it the key of medicine, civilization, education, or even evangelization. The key is in following the Master’s orders— the key is prayer. “Pray the Lord of the harvest….” In the natural realm, prayer is not practical but absurd. We have to realize that prayer is foolish from the commonsense point of view. […] How many of us pray without regard to the persons, but with regard to only one Person— Jesus Christ? He owns the harvest that is produced through distress and through conviction of sin.” CHAMBERS

I wish I could explain how prayer works, but I really don’t know.  I mean can I influence God in spiritual matters concerning others?  Many, many books have been written concerning the will of God, His sovereignty, and our role in the events of this life.  When I was in Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood I had a drill sergeant named Sergeant San Felix.  He was from Puerto Rico and had a very thick accent.  He would tell us to do something, but being a boy from the Midwest, I was not used to hearing such accents and often did not understand what he had said.  One day, he said “I don’t care if you don’t understand me, you better do it!”  So if it sounded like “push up” we got in the front leaning rest position. The point being, he was teaching us to be obedient, even when we did not understand.  In a way, that is how it is with our faith walk.  The Bible is clear that we are to pray, that we are to approach God with clean hearts and clean hands (no un-confessed sin).  We must be obedient and pray.  What happens as a result of our obedience is a mystery.  When Jesus taught the disciples to pray, He finished by saying “but not my will but your will be done”.  We express our hearts desire and then leave it to God.

Two things.  If someone asks you to pray for them, do it then, right then, with them, not later.  Second, if the Spirit prompts you to pray or to speak, do it then, right then, not later.  Yesterday I was in a meeting and was prompted to pray for another person in the meeting.  After the meeting I caught up with the person and told them that I had been prompted to pray for him.  It was at that point that he shared a difficulty he was facing with a grown child that was weighing very heavily on him.  (You never stop caring about your children.) God often uses you to remind others that He knows and He cares.  Think about it.  ELGIN
