Be Careful Little Tongue What You Say

"Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing." - 1 Peter 3:8-9

Have you ever gotten into verbal altercation? Something is said or done and you feel that you must defend yourself, someone else, perhaps right a wrong, or maybe just hit back because you have been hurt. Of course you have. It is part of the human condition. The temptation is to respond. The feeling that rises up in you is not reflective of the "spiritual you".

"I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish." - Galatians 5:16-17

Your flesh will seek opportunities to dominate you. Your flesh is contrary to your spiritual self. Before you know it - something will come out of your mouth that is not reflective of the Spirit in you.

"Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.....  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control." - Galatians 5:18-23

James wrote about the tongue and the challenge to tame it. It is so easy to speak against someone and feel justified. Unless you read what the Bible says about it.

"And the tongue is a fire, a world of [c]iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?" James 3:6-11

Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
