"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Have you ever been in a situation where as a Christian you were struggling with some issue and someone "figuratively" tossed some scripture at you as they "figuratively" drove by your house? I have heard some well-meaning Christians comment that you should not just give people a scripture verse when they need help. I agree with that in a way. But it might also be that what the person needs most is assurance that comes from the promises found in the Word of God.
Be careful that you don't discount the importance of sharing the Word of God with other Christians in their hour of need. It may well be that the Spirit of God will use that scripture to mend the heart and encourage that particular Christian to persevere. Apart from the working of the Spirit, the word can be just that - words. But with the Spirit it is the power of God.
Sharing verses with other Christians should not be a substitute for some other action that the Spirit has prompted you to take.
"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?" - James 2:15-16
In other words if you have the capacity to help the specific need - maybe it your time or your treasure - you should. If the Spirit has prompted you and you have said "No! I will do something less and call it a spiritual act." You deceive yourself and have quenched the Spirit. Don't' expect that a good thing will come from your sinful act. Seem harsh? I hope so.
The shared Word of God, empowered by the Spirit of God, communicated by a child of God can be a balm to a broken or hurting heart. An encouraging reminder of God's faithfulness to a saint who is struggling with their faith.
Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
