One Way - Really?

"Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?' Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.' John 14:5-6

There is a phenomenon in Houston, Texas that I have found to be amazing actually. There are frequent vehicle accidents, deadly ones, where someone was driving on the wrong side of the expressway - a divided highway - limited access - in the wrong direction when they were involved in a head-on collision.  My thought is, how did they mistake an exit ramp for an on ramp? Intoxicated - under the influence? Perhaps. Confused? Obviously. Convinced they were going in the right direction? Most likely. A fatal decision? Absolutely.

One estimate says that there are over 4200 religions in the world that are practiced by well-intentioned people. The exact number is not that important. The point is that there are millions of people "driving on the wrong side of the road in one-way traffic - headed to their doom - thinking that they are doing and believing rightly. So off they go. It proves to be a fatal decision.

If you are reading this, I would imagine that you are familiar with John 14:6 and the fact that Jesus is the only way to the Father and the only source of salvation.

"For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, 'The man who does those things shall live by them.' But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, 'Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” - Romans 10:5-11

I most often quote just verse 8 and 9, but thought I would add some context this time. In the United States, as in many other countries, people are free to believe in and practice any of those 4200 religions. In some countries, people are not. Christians who are part of the "Way", Jesus followers, are a minority in the world. Always have been and always will be. That includes you and me. It is we Christians driving against the flow of traffic. The people practicing other religions believe there is some sort of life after death but don't believe that Jesus is the only Way to eternal life with God.

To believe that requires a spiritual revelation. Without that revelation John14:6 is foolishness to people.

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." - 1 Corinthians 1:18

We are to be living testimonies of the truth of the Way - that Jesus is the only way. Salt and light in a world that is speeding toward its eternal destruction. The temptation is to go with the flow of traffic. resist it.

Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
