Faith and Politics

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were [d]sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. .... Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him." - 1 Corinthians 6:11, 15-17

It was not so many years ago when being a Christian was an attribute - it seems with respect to the affairs today's culture in this country it has become an impediment.  Our culture has redefined what is right and what is wrong.  It is no longer "thus saith the Lord" but "thus saith the consensus". Or at least what we are told is the consensus. Paul was writing to the church in Corinth about essentially the same problem. So what does this have to do with politics.

Politics is, at its root, about compromise. You must accept the bad with the good to get a little bit of good. Politics is about the designs of "men" while our faith is about God's design. Politics is compromising - God's design is uncompromising. Politics is about relative truth - or consensus - while Faith is about absolute, unchanging Truth.

Politicians represent their constituency (the natural) - people of faith represent the Creator God (the Spiritual). Our country is a Democracy - or more correctly a Republic. Our political systemic meant to bring order to a very complex society. That is good. But - what to do when the the representation of the constituency means that you must compromise your faith.  What are you first - a Christian or a Democrat or Republican? What political party do you identify with? How does that shape what you believe - hold as truth?

We are to be salt and light in a dark world. Don't let your politics become dominant over who you are in Christ. Both parties are comprised of mean and women who identify with the consensus of men. I suspect and hope that some of what "your" party declares to be right and true, rubs you the wrong way. But you have chosen the lesser of two evils. As Christians, we should be involved in the political process, however, not to the point where our faith is compromised.

Be careful that you don't spend more time watching the "talking heads" on TV sharing facts that have been bent to support their political positions that you do seeking the God who has given you eternal life. I remember my step-dad, when asked about a particular issue would say, "Lets look at the Bible and see what God says about it". The greatest commandment is to "Love God First". Everything else is put in the context of His Truth.

“But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not! For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." - Galatians 2:17-20

Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
