By What Power

My Utmost For His Highest

‘You must keep yourself in the proper condition to allow the life of the Son of God to be manifested in you, and you cannot keep yourself fit if you give way to self-pity. Our circumstances are the means God uses to exhibit just how wonderfully perfect and extraordinarily pure His Son is. Discovering a new way of manifesting the Son of God should make our heart beat with renewed excitement. It is one thing to choose adversity, and quite another to enter into adversity through the orchestrating of our circumstances by God’s sovereignty. And if God puts you into adversity, He is adequately sufficient to “supply all your need” (Philippians 4:19).’ CHAMBERS

Every Sunday night in Jacmel, missionaries gather to fellowship and praise God.  At a recent meeting, I was sharing about the importance of keeping Jesus central in what we do on mission.  The danger being that we attempt to do something that God has called us to in our strength – without God.  I told them if God had not called them to serve in Jacmel, then they should probably go home. Do you think that sounds harsh? My point was that I think we too often understate or ignore the spiritual significance of what we do.  Each of us has what I will call ‘natural ability’ (Of course everything is from our God and creator) but you don’t have to be a Christian to build a bridge.  It is possible to do ‘good’ things, in the name of Jesus, without Jesus being part of what we are doing. In Acts chapter 19, there were some men who tried to cast out a demon in the name of Jesus … ‘ And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (Acts 19:15-17)

The call of God requires the power of God to accomplish the purpose of God.  The Word says we need to be ready … that means that we must be spiritually prepared …

‘For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.’ (Ephesians 6:12-13)
