Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. - 1 Corinthians 9:24
Over the years we have been blessed to meet and serve with hundreds of Christians who share our passion for serving others. And though time and distance may separate us, I can talk with one of them voice or email and it is as if I had seen them yesterday. It is the Spirit of God that has bonded us together.
As I was writing one on these BLOG posts I referenced a Brother, friend and mentor. Then I called him to tell him what I had done. We had not spoken for 5 or 6 years. I shared that "I have been wondering if our season for service has passed. Frankly I am not ready to “lay down the plow”, but have been asking “What next Lord?” I am not sure what the Lord has in mind for me in the days and years ahead – but I am pretty sure I am not done – but like Job I must say “the Lord gives and the Lord takes away – blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21) In the meanwhile I will keep my hand to the plow for God’s glory and others’ good."
He responded - "What next? You’re doing it. First thing Paul said after not forsaking getting together is to encourage each other….. At 90 and 87 we stay closer to home, but it is our intent to not to drop out of the race till we go home… Keep writing!"
My friend was telling me ....
Fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. - 2 Timothy 4:7
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us - Hebrews 12:1
While I ran I would fix my eyes on something down the road and run to that and then refocus on the next thing. until I saw the finish line – then I would pick up the pace because I wanted to have nothing left when I crossed the line.
Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. - Hebrews 12:2
The hills were steep, my legs were tired, my breathing was labored - but I put one foot in front of the other - focused on the finish line. as I ran I saw more and more stopped or walking. This race we are in a spiritual one. It requires stamina that can only be found in Jesus and the power of the Spirit.
So how about friend? Are you in the stands cheering or are you suited up and ready to run the race that the Lord has signed you up for?
From my experience I can tell you that you better put a double knot in those shoestrings!
