Forgiveness Is Proof Of A Steadfast Faith

Dr. R.T. Kendall wrote in his book, Total Forgiveness: When Everything in You Wants to Hold a Grudge, Point a Finger, and Remember the Pain - God Wants You to Lay it All Aside :  "I have come to the conclusion that the primary way we grieve the Spirit in our lives is by fostering bitterness in our hearts. I say this because it is the first thing the apostle Paul mentions after warning us not to grieve the Spirit"

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." - Ephesians 4: 30-32

Forgiving is easier if we believe those who have done us wrong will be punished for what they have done to us somehow. This is what Jesus said about injustice ....

You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? - Matthew 5:38-46

Oh - but my flesh is crying out - "That cannot be possibly right!" More correctly - my flesh doesn't want it to be right. But at the same time the Spirit of God is witnessing to us that it is absolutely right according to how things work in God's economy.  Once again, we are shown that the life we have been called to and saved to is impossible to live if you try to live it through our personal determination and effort. It can only be done when I lay my life and will down - surrendered to the Creator God, the Word of God, and the leading of the Spirit of God.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. - Matthew 16:24

I must say no to what my old nature, my flesh, demands and follow Jesus' example. Paul reinforced that instruction in Romans chapter 12.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:1-2

Our ability to forgive, biblically, is proof of our steadfast faith. Trusting in God and not ourselves. Oh there are so many verses coming to my mind. I will end this with just one more.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. - Proverbs 3:5-8

Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
