"Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses [debts] (against you and others) as we forgive those who trespass [have debts owed to us] against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen." - Matthew 6: 9-13
If there is one scripture that you know by heart, besides John 3:16 it would probably be the Lord's prayer. Have you ever thought about the reason why Jesus did not say "You can pray to My Father." He said "Our Father"?
Let's consider some facts about our new life that were true when we were born again.
Jesus is the first born Son of God, but we are also Jehovah God's sons and daughters by faith in the first born.
"For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." - Romans 8:29
We are God's children.
"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is" - 1 John 3:1-2
We were adopted into the family of God on the day that we received new life by faith in Jesus.
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved." - Ephesians 1:3-6
Now, our primary citizenship is in heaven not on earth. We are merely pilgrims in this land. We learned the pledge allegiance to the flag of this country as a statement of our earthly citizenship and devotion to the United States. But, our primary allegiance is to our Father who is in heaven.
"Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself." - Philippians 3:17-21
We don't have a birth certificate testifying to who our parents are - we have the Holy Spirit who is a greater testimony.
"In Him [Jesus] also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory." - Ephesians 1:11-14
I want to encourage you to live each day with this perspective. You are a child of God - first, now and forever.
This is a verse from the song "Who You Say I Am" by Hillsong.
"Who the Son sets free Oh is free indeed I’m a child of God - Yes I am
In my Father’s house There’s a place for me I’m a child of God - Yes I am
I am chosen Not forsaken - I am who You say I am
You are for me Not against me - I am who You say I am"
You are who He says you are! So rejoice!
Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
