“Do you believe
this?” —John 11:26
“Martha believed
in the power available to Jesus Christ […] But— she needed a closer personal intimacy
with Jesus. Martha’s theology had its fulfillment in the future. But Jesus
continued to attract and draw her in until her belief became an intimate
possession. It then slowly emerged into a personal inheritance— “Yes, Lord, I
believe that You are the Christ…” (John 11:27). Is the Lord dealing with you in
the same way? Is Jesus teaching you to have a personal intimacy with Himself?
Allow Him to drive His question home to you— “Do you believe this?” Are you
facing an area of doubt in your life? Have you come, like Martha, to a
crossroads of overwhelming circumstances where your theology is about to become
a very personal belief? This happens only when a personal problem brings the
awareness of our personal need. To believe is to commit. […] Then, […] I find
that faith is as natural as breathing. And I am staggered when I think how
foolish I have been in not trusting Him earlier.” CHAMBERS
God uses life to
draw us to a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. Not just factual understanding, but personal
understanding .. a spiritual realization … an understanding that allows us to
respond to life in a super-natural way.
We tend to trivialize the significance of our spiritual nature. To speak of the super-natural is not like a
reference to Superman .. or some other fictional character. It’s like Jesus … who command the natural …
who created it … (John 1:1-5) “In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him
nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the
light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has
not overcome it.” A
s a Christian, you have Christ and Christ has you. Like Jesus is one with the Father … we are one with Him. What that means is that we have a
super-natural ability to deal with life in the here and now. Just like our life in the “bye and bye” has
been determined, our ability to respond to this natural world, super-naturally
is possible through Jesus. There are so
many admonitions in the Bible for us to not fear .. to trust … to look to Jesus
.. to draw close to God. That is because
our spiritual strength for living the supernatural life is found in that
relationship. What does living in the
super-natural look like? (Corinthians 4:8-10) “We are troubled on
every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted,
but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the
body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made
manifest in our body.” It is about being the furnace and not being consumed,
spending the night with the lions, and not being devoured, being caught in a mighty storm at sea and not
drowning, or perhaps facing a heart-breaking problem and not losing hope. Look to Jesus. ELGIN
