Steady As You Go

My Utmost For His Highest

“Yes, I think it is right,” Peter said, “. . . to stir you up by reminding you . . .” (2 Peter 1:13). It is a most disturbing thing to be hit squarely in the stomach by someone being used of God to stir us up— someone who is full of spiritual activity. Simple active work and spiritual activity are not the same thing. Active work can actually be the counterfeit of spiritual activity. The real danger in spiritual laziness is that we do not want to be stirred up— all we want to hear about is a spiritual retirement from the world. Yet Jesus Christ never encourages the idea of retirement— He says, “Go and tell My brethren . . .” (Matthew 28:10).’ CHAMBERS

When I write these devotions, I often think about the someone’s that may read them.  Often times the words are convicting … like ‘to be hit squarely in the stomach’.  I think maybe I should soften the words … but then I remember that the purpose is not to lull you into sleep but spurn you on to action. To motivate you to press on toward the mark of your high calling in Jesus.

Life has a way of making our journey difficult.  But Jesus has made provision for us through the Holy Spirit.   John 14:26-27  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  (27)  Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The fruit of the Spirit is not produced at anchor in the calm of the protected bay but out to sea in the midst of the storm.  The Christian is at his best when the sea is raging around him … and he is standing confidently on the deck, bow turned to the waves … eyes fixed on the course .. his confidence in the Master.  “When peace like a river attendeth my way.  When sorrows like sea billows roll.  Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say … It is well … It is well … with my soul!”

When the disciples were at sea with Jesus ..and the storm was raging, Jesus was asleep. (Matt 8:24-26)  Notice .. Jesus was sleeping … in the storm .. boat taking on water …

Is your boat taking on water?  Are the waves rolling over the bow?  Jesus is in the boat with you.  You have nothing to fear.  You may get wet .. maybe bruised .. but all is not lost so long as you are with the Master.  So steady as you go Christian.
