"Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it…" —Luke 14:28
“….. The conditions of discipleship given to us by our Lord in verses 26, 27, and 33 mean that the men and women He is going to use in His mighty building enterprises are those in whom He has done everything. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple ” (Luke 14:26). This verse teaches us that the only men and women our Lord will use in His building enterprises are those who love Him personally, passionately, and with great devotion— those who have a love for Him that goes far beyond any of the closest relationships on earth." - My Utmost For His Highest
Jesus’ words sound harsh at the face of it. He is speaking to the attitude of the heart. We all nod our head in agreement that we are to love God with all of our hearts, minds, souls and strength (Matthew 22:37-39) That is until that devotion and call comes in conflict with earthly affections. What or whom do you love more than God? When you know it’s God but it requires you to subordinate your affection for your family to fulfill the call … then that can’t be God … right? Wrong. Does that mean you are irresponsible? No.
That means that you will trust God even though you don’t know how what He calls you to do will be possible. But that also mean that you must know it is God who is speaking and not your wild ambition or love of adventure. If you venture out on your own in the name of God, without God, you are going to battle with no bullets for your gun. God never calls you to do what is possible for men on their own … but to what is entirely possible for Him through you. Responding in obedience to His call will most likely require that you let go of something that you hold in high regard, perhaps not forever but maybe if even for a time. That is where many Christians falter. Doing what God calls you to do requires faith and often is contrary to conventional wisdom.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." - Hebrews 11:1
Think about it – Pray about it – Believe it – Walk in it. Let your light shine and give God the glory.
