Who Is Jesus?

To believe who Jesus is - requires faith.

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." - 1 Corinthians 1:18

 Jesus is God

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." John 1:1-5

These are the verses that the Spirit used to illuminate my mom's heart - that caused her to understand who Jesus was and is - which led to her salvation and a spiritual heritage. She was the first of 15 children in her family to raise her children to follow Jesus.

Jesus is the Christ

"So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 16:14-17

Understanding who Jesus is comes only by spiritual revelation. You cannot deduce it with your own intellect. Just like with my mom. Just like me. Just like every other person who is born again.

Jesus is our High Priest

"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." - Hebrews 4:14-16

Just like the high priest did for the nation of Israel - Jesus makes intercession for us - we who are part of spiritual Israel. He is our eternal atonement - the sacrifice once for all - our propitiation - the mercy seat that satisfies the wrath of God for sin.

Jesus is King

"Jesus answered [Pilate], “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”  Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." - John 18:36-37

The truth of who Jesus is a spiritual revelation. even though the Jews looked forward to the day the Messiah would appear - they were spiritually blind. Just like Pilate they tried to understand who Jesus was from their preconceived ideas that came from the wisdom of natural men. Just as Jesus said to Nicodemus -

"[Nicodemus] Do not marvel that I [Jesus] said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness." - John 3:8-11

Jesus is the First Born and Our Brother

"For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters." - Romans 8:29

Spiritually we are God the Father's offspring - sons and daughter. Jesus is the oldest brother if you will. Jesus is a reflection of the Father.

"Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”  Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." - John 14:5-9

And as Jesus is a reflection of the Father - as we are conformed to the image of Christ - we reflect the image of our heavenly Father as well. So if someone should say to us - show us the Father - we can say - "If you have seen me, then you have seen the Father!"

Jesus is All We Need

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." - Galatians 2:20

I heard a preacher say once, "When Jesus is all we have - that is when we understand that Jesus is all we need."

There is a song "More Like You" that resonates with this idea.

More like You - Jesus, more like You - Fill my heart with your desire - To make me more like You

More like You - Jesus, more like You - Touch my lips with holy fire And make me more like You

Lord, You are my mercy - Lord, you are my grace - All my deepest sins - Have forever been erased

Draw me in your presence - Lead me in Your ways - I long to bring you glory - In righteousness and praise. <end>
